Snapchat is now releasing its AI chatbot, called My AI, to all global users for free. The chatbot was initially only available for Snapchat Plus subscribers when it launched back in February.
My AI’s global rollout was announced at the Snap Partner Summit on Wednesday. The tool is powered by Open AI’s GPT technology, and instead of spewing essays, My AI can recommend Lenses, generate responses to a friend, and more.

My AI Features
Snapchat claims that till date, users have exchanged nearly 2 million messages with My AI daily. In addition to generating messages, My AI is getting various new features, including adding it to group chats and getting map recommendations.
My AI can also be given a name and be customized with unique Bitmojis. The chatbot can be added to group chats with an @ mention, making the conversation more interesting.
The bot will appear in the group chat with a sparkle next to its name, denoting that it’s a bot. You can tag it in the chat and ask for recommendations on the best cafes, popular activities nearby, and more.
The chatbot can also suggest places to visit from the Snap Map and suggest the appropriate Lenses for various occasions. You can also send My AI a Snap and get chat replies in return.
Snapchat will be jazzing up the chatbot in the future, allowing My AI to send you “generative” Snaps instead of text messages.
Keeping My AI (Relatively) Safe for Kids
Ever since My AI debuted this February, there have been concerns of misuse and lack of safety. Snapchat has been trying to polish the chatbot by introducing new safety features. The brand now claims, “99.5% percent of My AI responses conform to our community guidelines.”
Snapchat adds that it has programmed a “new age signal” which uses the Snapchatter’s birthdate to tweak its response. It will also detect if the user is misusing the service to view “potentially harmful content,” and then temporarily limit access to My AI.
The brand is also planning to integrate Family Center, Snapchat’s in-app parental tool, into My AI. Family Center allows parents and guardians to monitor the child’s Snapchat usage.
